6 Reasons Why Natural & Organic Skincare Is Best

What is natural & organic skincare?

Organic skincare products are derived from plants and other naturally occurring ingredients, grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilisers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other additives or chemicals. Those products formulated with ingredients found in nature, do not contain synthetic preservatives such as parabens, mineral oil, petroleum.

Natural doesn't mean organic. If a skincare product is to be natural, the majority of ingredients must be from nature but can also contain artificial or 'nature identical' ingredients made in a lab.

An organic skincare product however contains only ingredients that have been grown using organic farming methods without the use of synthetic fertilisers, genetically modified ingredients or herbicides.

To make things even more complicated…natural formula doesn’t mean chemical free. Water is a chemical, so is oxygen and so are the essential oils, everything is a chemical!

Why is organic skincare better?

  1. Organic ingredients have fewer toxins and do not contain any harmful synthetic ingredients for the body. Organic skin care products are therefore gentle on your skin and won’t harm you in the long run.

  2. Organic skincare products are hypoallergenic and without harsh chemicals, so when well formulated, natural organic skincare products are less likely to cause allergic reactions, inflammation or irritation in comparison to those made from synthetic, ‘lab derived’ ingredients.

  3. Organic products are just as potent as their non-organic counterparts, meaning you can still get some really great results. Using natural, organic skincare products ensure that you get the real nutritional benefits from its ingredients. Natural organic ingredients such as Prickly pear oil and Rosehip oil for example, are known to soothe, nourish, moisturize and promote smooth skin.

  4. Natural plants and vegetable oils incorporate antioxidants, which are of huge benefit to the skin. Antioxidants protect your skin from free radical damage, a known cause of premature ageing, softening the look of fine lines and wrinkles. They can also help reignite skin’s vitality, vibrancy, and overall healthy look and feel, a great addition to any anti-ageing skincare routine.

  5. Organic ingredients have a natural affinity with the skin. Working in harmony with your body, these ingredients are easily recognised and absorbed by the body. They allow your skin to better balance and mend itself.

  6. Organic skincare products begin with organic ingredients grown and produced using sustainable practices. Naturally grown ingredients, free from toxic pesticides and fertilisers, don't leave a harmful footprint on the planet, particularly the soil, water, and air. They are simply better for the environment!

Why it is important to use natural skincare products?

-Your skin is the largest living, breathing organ of your body. Made of three layers (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis), the skin serves as a protective shield against heat, light, injury, and infection. What you apply to your skin may be absorbed into your bloodstream, which then gets circulated around your whole body. So it is important to choose well the ingredients you put onto your skin.

-A natural organic skin care routine for sensitive skin may help rebuild a healthy skin barrier (the outermost layer of the skin) by avoiding products with irritating ingredients. Specific organic plant oils (such as Jojoba oil, Borage oil, Rosehip oil) combine essential vitamins, botanicals, and minerals that heal and help restore the skin barrier, replenishing it with fatty acids. They could also prevent it from losing moisture. The skin barrier is what keeps your skin looking and feeling healthy so it is important to look after it!

-Most organic skincare products are cruelty-free, meaning they are not tested on animals.  They are also sustainable.

-Organic beauty products complement a healthy lifestyle. Our skin, as the rest of our body, is impacted by many factors, such as genetic, hormones, sleep, movement, stress, pollution…. In the same way you would feed your body with a nutritious healthy diet, your skin needs the best ingredients. What you put in your body is as important as what you put on your body. Beauty and health inside and out!

Do organic skincare products work?

-Certified organic ingredients perform just as well, if not better than conventional lab made beauty products and organic skincare products can be highly effective when formulated properly.

-Plants grown organically (without herbicides and pesticides) are found to contain a higher level of vital antioxidant vitamins than non-organic plants. This is because they are grown without herbicides and pesticides, their organic ingredients are also free from contamination, which therefore means the same for your skin and body. When ingredients come in contact with the dermis (the second layer of skin) they reach live blood vessels and structural tissue like collagen and elastin. This gives ingredients in your skincare a chance to make skin look firm, tight, and plump. The healthier the ingredient, the better!

-An organic skincare product can contains a high proportion of active ingredients (such as vitamine A, C, E). Actives are natural ingredients that have been scientifically proven to change the structure of your skin at a cellular level, they are key to a highly effective formula. Having the correct proportion of these active ingredients in the facial oils for example is important as they work hard to protect your skin. In synthetic skin care products, active ingredients only make up 5 to 10% of its contents.

It is a matter of personal choice and it is important to understand what ingredients you are putting on your skin in order to make informed choices that work for you.
